Collapse of cycloidal electron flows induced by misalignments in a magnetically insulated diode

چکیده
The effect of a slight misalignment in the magnetic field on a magnetically insulated diode is investigated. It is found that a slight tilt in the magnetic field, with a minute component along the dc electric field, completely destabilizes the cycloidal electron flow in the crossed-field gap. The final state consists of the classical Brillouin flow superimposed by a turbulent background, together with a slow electron drift across the gap. This disruption of the cycloidal flow is quite insensitive to the emission current density, and is due to the accumulation of space charge in the gap caused by the magnetic misalignment. This result was obtained from a one-dimensional simulation code. It reinforces the notion that the turbulent, near Brillouin-like states are generic in ALL vacuum crossed-field devices. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-664X~98!02506-3#

Annular electron beam with virtual cathode in a coaxial diode with magnetic insulation
Accumulation of electrons in course of transportation of tubular high-current electron beam in a coaxial diode with magnetic insulation was studied in the situation of counterstream electron motion occurring due to the formation of a virtual cathode. Accumulation of electrons in these flows is accompanied by gradual increase in their relative energy spread and simultaneous decrease in the maxim...

A thin cut made through a z-pinch by an intense laser beam can become a magnetically insulated diode crossed by an intense ion beam. For larger cuts, the gap is crossed by an intense relativistic electron beam, stopped by magnetic bremsstrahlung resulting in a pointlike intense x-ray source. In either case, the impedance of the pinch discharge is increased, with the power delivered rising in th...

The results of an experimental investigation of the plasma dynamics in a magnetically insulated ion diode in bipolar-pulse mode are presented. The experiments were done at the pulsed TEMP-4M accelerator by formation of a first negative pulse (100 ns, 150-200 kV) and a second positive pulse (80 ns, 250-300 kV). The voltage-current diode characteristics were used to analyze the plasma behavior in...
متن کاملTailoring of electron flow current in magnetically insulated transmission lines
It is desirable to optimize (minimizing both the inductance and electron flow) the magnetically insulated vacuum sections of low impedance pulsed-power drivers. The goal of low inductance is understandable from basic efficiency arguments. The goal of low electron flow results from two observations: (1) flowing electrons generally do not deliver energy to (or even reach) most loads, and thus con...
